review

First of all, sorry for posting so late in the week. Our basketball team had our tournaments games this weekend and we won the conference so were going to the NCAA tournament.
But back to our class on Thurs. We just had review day of the tape and wraps jobs that we have learned so far. i was getting pretty frusterated during class though because there is one part of taping the ankle that i can get the angle right and the tape always gets wrinkles in it. Wrinkles are really bad to have because they cause the athlete to get blisters and no one wants to have a blister. It just gets really frusterating when you watch our teacher or another trainer tape someone and they make everything look so easy when you know how hard it really is. But hopefully i can get the angles figured out by next week so I can really stand to work on the other tape and wrap jobs and master them as well.

groin pains

So last tues we were back in the training room for Athletic Training class. We were being taught how to wrap up the groin and other hip injuries with compression wrap. when wrapping this part of the body it is very critical to be very professional because these wraps go very close to some regions of the body. like the penis. Also, we learned that when wrapping someones hamstring the athlete has to take off their pants and if your athlete is of the opposite sex it is highly recommended to have another person in the room with you while you wrap the leg so there are no questions to be asked if anythig would be said.

in the classroom

well today we were in the classroom instead of the training room for athletic training. these are the days where we go over our power point notes instead of doing hands on activities. our lesson that we learned about today was the hip and pelvis region. doing notes for an hour ad fifteen min long gets pretty boring. usually i catch myself day dreaming and looking around and not paying attention. i try to pay attention as much as i can though so its easier to remember the material for our test later. hopefully in the next few classes we will be back in the training room because it is alot more fun to be in the training room doing hands on things like taping and special tests to figure out what the injury is.

knee pains

today for class we had to take a test over what he have learned on ankles, lower legs and knees. over the last couple days i spent a lot of time studying for this test because there are a ton of injuries that we had to know the mechanism of the injury (how the athlete got injured) and the signs and symptoms of the specific injury. even though i studied for around 5-6 hours for this exam/quiz, i still struggled while taking it. this really made me mad because of all the time i spent studying i will still probably get a low grade. i just hope over the next couple of tests i can get a better grade in it because i have to maintain a B- in this class to be able to be accepted into the program.

after the test we learned another taping method. we learned how to tape a dislocated patella. which pretty much means your knee cap is out of place, which can be very painful. the good thing though is that the taping for it really isn't th hard to do.

starting to tape

the last blog that i posted, i was telling everyone the basics of becoming an athletic trainer. for the next four weeks ill tel about what we are learning each week.

in class today, we are learnng about how to tape the ankle and foot arches. the ankle is a pretty complicated task to learn how to tape it. the hardest part about it is that you want to tape the ankle without having any wrinkles in the tape. this is the part that i am struggling with. hopefully if i keep working at it then i can become good at taping ankles. the good thing though is that we have another two weeks until i have to take the test on my ankle taping. taping arches is also hard to do becaue everyone's foot is shaped different and its hard to place the tape on around their foot with out having wrinkles. the reason why you cant have wrinkles in your tape is because is may cause the athlete to get blisters. hopefully within the next few weeks i can figure out the little techniques of ankle taping and then be ready to learn how to tape our next body part.

Starting off in Athletic Training

When I first decided that i was going to choose Athletic Training as my major in college I did not know everything that it involved. First, we have to have 80 hours of observation. All we do during this time is just watch the trainer and learn what they do during games and activities. Also, we have to complete modules, which is doing what we learned in class. As in, fitting crutches to the right size for example. A lot of time and energy is needed to continue in the program.
